01 What are vertebral subluxations?

Vertebral subluxations are otherwise known as misalignments of any of the 24 moveable bones of the spine or can occur in virtually any of the hundreds of joints of the body, including the peripheral joints such as the hips, knees, feet, arms and hands.  Subluxation are often the underlying cause of a wide variety of health problems, as they can exert direct and indirect pressure on the nerves exiting the spine via the spinal cord.  This in turn causes nerve interference as transmission of energy via the nervous system may become impaired.

There are three basic causes of subluxations and they are all related to stress. Physical stress or injury such as slips and falls, motor vehicle accidents, repetitive stress and motions, and improper lifting.  Emotional causes like anger, anxiety and fear may also cause subluxations. Alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet can be chemical causes of subluxations.  All stress on the body can have the negative effect of causing subluxations and results in nerve interference.

The primary form of care to reduce subluxations is a schedule of chiropractic adjustments. By applying a specific and precise force, in the right direction and at the right time, over time, changes in the position and motion of spinal bones can be made.  Chiropractors ascertain the presence of subluxations using a complete examination including necessary x-rays.

You can have subluxations and not even know it!  Like the early stages of tooth decay or heart disease, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear.

Sometimes. Today’s hectic lifestyles are a constant source of vertebral subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these minor problems as we bend and stretch, or when we sleep at night. When vertebral subluxations don’t resolve, you’ll want to see a chiropractor for an adjustment.
