Digestive disorders range from the occasional upset stomach, heartburn and nausea to more serious and life-threatening diseases such as colorectal cancer. These disorders encompass the gastrointestinal tract as well as the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Oral medications can affect the digestive system in a number of different ways. Both prescription and over-the-counter drugs may create harmful effects in some people. Furthermore, certain medications taken together may cause extremely severe side effects.
Chiropractors have serious concerns regarding the overuse of many medications, especially those which mask underlying health conditions. Most digestive disorders are caused by stress; either physical, emotional or chemical in nature. The key to understanding the effect of long-term stress on the body is related to the vertebral subluxation complex. Chiropractors know that subluxations, when present in the neck and mid-back regions, can put dangerous stress on the nerves exiting the spine. These same nerves supply energy to all of the internal organs including the organs of digestion. If misalignment of these spinal bones occurs, there is a potential for interference to the nervous system. Interference of nerve energy to the stomach may increase stomach acid, inviting esophageal reflux or stomach ulcers.
Fortunately for chiropractic, gentle adjustments will restore this nerve flow, and along with proper nutrition including fresh water, regular exercise and decreasing external stress and other aspects of a healthy lifestyle, digestive disorders can be effectively managed and/or eliminated.
